(Incoming) Commodores Comments

hank you Bay Sailors for having the confidence in me to put me in this position. Special thanks to my predecessor, Ed Talbot, not only for his dedication in serving as Commodore for the third time, but also for encouraging me when I was wavering at the tail end of my hospitalization. Judy Speed also did a fine job as head of the Nominating Committee in coming up with the slate of officers and committee heads that we now have in place.

(Outgoing) Commodore’s Comments

Greetings! By the time you read this, I and a dozen other Bay Sailors will be on our way to Seattle and the San Juan Islands. It’s been a good year, and I felt privileged to serve as your commodore this past year. I was fortunate to have a great team of Board members and committee chairs to work with, and I leave the club in the capable hands of Allen Fiske, John Walker, and their great team, many of whom have served before. I’ll still be active in Bay Sailors but will have the fun of watching from the sidelines for awhile. Thanks again!

– Capt. Ed Talbot

It has been an especially challenging year for me due to a couple of physical problems, but my involvement in the club and, most importantly, the involvement with the people in it, has been one of the prime motivating factors in helping me to recover. Our club and the running of it is truly a team effort. As you have seen at some of our meetings when we introduce all of the officers and committee heads, the number of people involved is sometimes nearly half of the fifty or so people who attend the monthly membership meetings. That is a true measure of the cohesiveness of our club.

Looking forward to the coming year, we will do our best to continue the traditions and maintain the present format of three or four day sails and one overnight sail per month, interspersed with international cruises; and, hopefully, we can make our trip down the West Coast an annual event as well. In addition, we are always open to new ideas from you.

Our theme for this year is going to be education. We are fortunate to have Dallas Dawson, a long-time club member who not only has held many of the key positions of responsibility in the club but also owns the biggest boat in our fleet, heading this up. He has pledged to bring a new set of topics each month to our membership meetings to educate you on the basics and finer points of sailing. This will help your confidence as a sailor and also help our skippers with more knowledgeable crew.

This promises to be a fun-filled, educational year.

Commodore Allen Fiske

June 2009 General Meeting Notes
— by Karen Heston, Secretary

June 2009 General Meeting Notes Commodore Ed Talbot welcomed members and guests. It was the 16th anniversary of the founding of Bay Sailors and we are still going strong!

Bill Cutler, Debbie Colson, Paul Williams, Tom Dooley, Diane Sullivan and Maggie Frederici spoke of their sailing experiences to the Keys and the Dry Tortugas. Everyone had adventures, as you always do on sailing trips. Other than some bad weather along the way, it sounded like a good time was had by all.

This is a busy month with the Joint Board Meeting and Change of Watch as well as our End of the Year Party. I hope many of you have the opportunity to sail into Twin Dolphins in Bradenton and enjoy the weekend down there.

Our guest speaker this evening was Lee from Boat US. Boat US provides emergency service to boaters at a charge of $135 per year. If any of you have ever been stranded out on the water, you know what a great deal it is. Lee also spoke of the importance of having an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) on board. In the past few months, we have all heard about boats sinking in the Gulf, and many people may have been saved if they had had this device on board. You can learn more about EPIRBs on the West Marine website.

Commodore Ed introduced all the Board members and committee chairmen for the 2008-2009 year. It’s been our pleasure serving you this year. The 2009-2010 Board takes over July 1, with all positions filled. Thank you, Judy Speed, for all your hard work making that all come together.

Bill Brennan was the winner of the 50-50 drawing. Enjoy your summer…plan to spend some of it on the water!
